Free Tutorial: Scrap Busting Faux Leather Earrings!

Free Tutorial: Scrap Busting Faux Leather Earrings!

Here at Sallie Tomato we love projects that use up scraps and can be fashionable at the same time! In honor of Faux Leather February, one of our favorite months of the year, we are bringing back a great project that requires no sewing and is an instant talking point for all your friends and family.

These tassel earrings were inspired by the classic movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Audrey Hepburn made these earrings stylish in 1961 and they are still trendy today.

Check out the step-by-step instructions below or the video tutorial below to learn how to make these earrings from beginning to end.

INSTRUCTIONS

Attach one jump ring to each earring. Use your pliers to ease the jump ring open, hook it on, and then close it up again. To open and close jump rings, twist the ring rather than pulling the ends apart. This will prevent the shape of the jump ring from distorting, and makes it easier to line the ends up again. Faux Leather Earrings Steps 1-3

Next, cut (2) 2” x 2” pieces for the tassels and (2) 1/4” by 1-1/4” pieces for the connectors.

On the wrong side of each tassel piece, mark a horizontal line 3/8” down from the top edge. Using a rotary cutter or scissors, cut the tassel fringe from the bottom up to the marked line, about 1/4˝ apart across the entire width. Cut 1/8” apart if you would like a more delicate fringe. Faux Leather Earrings Steps 4-5

Apply hot glue or fabric glue to one end of each connector. Position one connector on the left edge of each tassel against the 3/8˝ mark. (Photo 6)

Faux Leather Earrings Step 6

Slide the jump ring over the end of the connector so the ring is in the center. Apply glue to the join of the jump ring and also the connector end. Fold the connector in half, matching the short raw edges and press down to glue in place. (Photo 7)

Faux Leather Earrings Step 7

Wrap and glue the tassel to itself along the top edge; wrapping as tight as possible. (Photos 8 & 9)
